South america

Out of all the different continents, South America claims the smallest portion of the Coptic Diaspora, but even still boasts an active and dedicated congregation of both Egyptian immigrants and native South Americans. Starting from just a few families in 1997 to an established parish of hundreds across both Bolivia and Brazil, the two dioceses in South America have transformed and grown into tenements of their respective communities. In addition to the year-round services put on for both the church congregation and local community, this is also a popular destination for mission trips of Coptic parishes from North America, welcome all year round.

Diocese of Santa Cruz and of all Bolivia

Lovingly shepherded by H.G Bishop Youssef, this diocese covers all of Bolivia. Since 1997, this congregation has been growing with the grace of God to include 7 churches, a library, a computer center, and a medical center. It is a major part of Bolivia and Bolivia is a major part of it, with over 450 Bolivians part of the regular congregation.

Fun fact: In Dec 2000, when Pope Shenouda III first sent Bishop Youssef to minister to the Copts in the area, only 1 Copt actually remained! Humble beginnings!

Diocese of São Paulo and of All Brazil

Shepherded by H.G Bishop Aghathon, this diocese covers the Coptic population of Brazil, Paraguay, and most other Portuguese-speaking territories. There is a small but dedicated and diverse population of faithful in Brazil, with the church of San Marcos in Sao Paulo being consecrated by Pope Shenouda III in 2006!

Fun fact: This is the only predominantly Portuguese-speaking Coptic diocese in the world!
